To get genetically tested for breast cancer and ovarian cancer, you will need to see a genetic counselor or your doctor. Tests for altered BRCA1 and/or BRCA2 genes are performed on a blood sample that is drawn in a doctor's office, clinic, laboratory, or hospital. Then the blood sample is sent to a special laboratory to check for mutations in the BRCA1 and/or BRCA2 genes.
